Mathematics Online

This session will present some points to consider when developing an online course. If you have not taught an online course, there are some important components of an online course that you want to make sure you include. If you are currently teaching an online course, the topics presented may help to enhance your course. The presenter will provide components of an online course and issues that arise when teaching online. If you are planning on teaching a course online, are currently teaching an online course or are providing online assignments to a class with which you meet, you want to consider the issues that are presented here. The presenter has taught online courses in College Algebra.

Thanks Kathy,

Your presentation approached this as if all online courses are equivalent. Are there any distinguishing lessons (recommendations) for online instruction in mathematics? Are there grade level distinctions (K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Community College, Undergraduate, Graduate)? How do the access to online tools impact instruction?

Thanks again,
Sid

Kathy,

Thank you for your presentation, which confirmed many of the things I do in my online math courses. What is the format of the math assignments in your college algebra courses? Do you use a web-based math program such as MyMathLab, Math Zone or ALEKS? Or, do students submit their assignments as scanned documents or Word documents using math editors (i.e. Microsoft Equation Editor)? How do you administer the tests?

Sorry for the many questions!

I found the PowerPoint slides but may have missed a formal presentation if there was one. I am helping a new online instructor design a remedial Precalculus course. He wants to use 20 minute screen movie lectures captured in Mathmatica. I am interested in how the course can be made more engaging (I have not designed a math course before).

I am also curious about options for collecting student homework and how to provide feedback on quizzes using Blackboard online tests. How do you let students know which questions they got wrong when the assessemnt tool only provides an overall grade?

thanks all
