Technology Integration with Preservice Teachers

This presentation is designed for teacher education programs and pre-service teachers in integrating technology in teaching and learning. Participants in this study are 18 teaching fellows in the class of 2012 at North Carolina Central University School of Education. As part of a technology grant developed by the School of Education, each student received a laptop and iPod at the beginning of their first year to prepare them to use technology throughout their teacher education program and to prepare them for technology integration during their student teaching and post-teacher education program. Also, different technology surveys were administered to teaching fellows ranging from their perceptions of technology integration to using emerging technologies in teaching and learning. At the end of their first semester, December 2008, Teaching Fellows would participate in a round table discussion on their experiences with technology. This study will continue until 2012.

Technology Integration with Preservice Teachers

It was clear from my initial research with Teaching Fellows that there seems to be a wide gap between technology integrated in classrooms and technology used by Teaching Fellows in social interaction. There was less technology integrated in courses compared with variety of technologies used by Teaching Fellows in social interaction.
As faculty and teachers, how can we bridge this integration gap?
Are we failing technology ready students by not teaching or preparing them on how to use technology in teaching?

This was a very interesting presentation. I am trying each semester to integrate technology, but using a different approach for my pre-service teachers. The approach is to utilize a great deal of open source options and our driving question for the semester is...How do we provide the skills needed to for the 21st century learner? So we begin by looking at the digital learner and their characteristics and choose from an array of tools available. This is different from my past approach of having my students just create a PowerPoint around a lesson. It seems to be more meaningful to my students.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I plan on continuing to branch out.
