Serious Fun: The Creation of a Library Staff Training Game [Asynchronous]
This presentaion will demonstrate a game developed for training student workers to staff the User Services Desk in the Health Sciences Library. The game was created to give students the chance to practice problem solving by presenting simulations of situations they may face while working at the desk. A testing module at the end of each game level allows for tracking of student knowledge. The goal of the demonstration is to prove that effective games can be created without using expensive hard to learn technology. During the demonstration we will: • Display early versions of the game as well as the most recent version • Examine the testing modules • Describe students actual and perceived learning experiences • Discuss software and technology used to create the game

Using a Variety of Technologies to Provide Library Services for Distance Education Students [Asynchronous]
Mary Livermore Library employs a variety of technologies to provide research assistance to distance education programs. We use the RefWorks bibliographic software program, as well as the folder functionality available in Ebsco, to help effectively “tag team” reference services. We provide virtual instruction using interactive java-rich “on-the-fly” online tutorials. The Blackboard learning management system is used to help provide document delivery services. The signatures feature in Outlook is a handy way to provide step-by-step research instruction, and we assure quality of our services through the use of a webform satisfaction survey sent to distance education students via email. We will briefly demonstrate the use of these various technologies and will encourage session participants to share their own best practices. Useful handouts will be provided.

Reusable Multimedia Resources to Enhance Information Literacy [Tuesday]
At North Carolina State University librarians are designing multimedia e-learning resources on information topics that deepen student understanding of how information is created and the scholarly communication process. Unlike library tutorials or face-to-face library instruction that teach skills on how to find and evaluate information, these short, multimedia modules focus on topics such as the peer review process in research, the social construction of information in Wikipedia, the function of a literature review, and how economics shape access to information. Because these reusable learning modules are focused on overarching concepts rather than the use of library resources at specific universities or colleges, they can be used in a variety of instructional contexts and shared across institutions. Come learn about these e-learning resources you can incorporate into your own instruction and share ideas about additional information concepts of importance to learners in an increasingly complex information world.

Expanding Library Instruction Online: Using Elluminate to Reach Both On-Campus and Distance Education Students [Thursday]
Learn how librarians at North Carolina State University are using Elluminate, an online synchronous classroom, to expand library instruction and reach more graduate students. Although librarians sometimes use online classrooms to teach distance learners as part of their online courses, such virtual environments are typically not used to reach on-campus students. In an effort to strategically expand the library's outreach and instructional services, librarians recently collaborated with college stakeholders to market online library workshops to graduate students outside the context of specific courses and regardless of on-campus or distance education registration classification. We will discuss how initial work with distance education students was expanded to include on-campus students, highlight the benefits and challenges of using Elluminate as an instructional tool, and outline the lessons learned in marketing and designing these workshops.

Using Multimedia to Communicate: Libraries Collaborating with Researchers, Teachers, and Learners [Thursday]
We will discuss how we help researchers, teachers, and learners communicate about their work using multimedia technologies. Through media such as images, audio, and video, users can document projects, report results, and create narratives. Delivery options include online via websites, blogs, podcasts, and YouTube videos as well as more traditional methods such as publications, posters or PowerPoint presentations. We will also discuss how librarians can serve effectively as multimedia project facilitators and collaborators. Participants will view and discuss examples and brainstorm ways to develop similar models for their own environments. Topics to be covered include: • Promoting the service • Facilitating collaborations • Integrating instruction into courses • Brainstorming and defining projects • Consulting in effective selection and use of hardware and software • Providing design expertise • Exploring and referring to other campus resources
