Expanding Library Instruction Online: Using Elluminate to Reach Both On-Campus and Distance Education Students [Thursday]

Learn how librarians at North Carolina State University are using Elluminate, an online synchronous classroom, to expand library instruction and reach more graduate students. Although librarians sometimes use online classrooms to teach distance learners as part of their online courses, such virtual environments are typically not used to reach on-campus students. In an effort to strategically expand the library's outreach and instructional services, librarians recently collaborated with college stakeholders to market online library workshops to graduate students outside the context of specific courses and regardless of on-campus or distance education registration classification. We will discuss how initial work with distance education students was expanded to include on-campus students, highlight the benefits and challenges of using Elluminate as an instructional tool, and outline the lessons learned in marketing and designing these workshops.
