Can professional development in 3D online, virtual worlds disrupt the after-school workshop paradigm? We are exploring the use of Second Life as a medium for professional development that brings K-12 educators together for engaging conversations about important books like Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns by Christensen, Horn, and Johnson (2008). Plus we are hosting outstanding teacher leaders who share their innovations in learning and teaching. Our goal for this panel discussion is to create a compelling narrative as collaborators representing participating K-12 schools, the North Carolina Virtual Public School, NC Department of Public Instruction, and the United Star Distance Learning Consortium share their experiences and insights about professional development held in Second Life. We will include a demonstration by having our K-12 educators join the panel via Second Life. SL residents, please bring your laptops and join us in-world.
