Plenary Session: Tales from the Floating-Desktop: a raft of Google Tools begins our transition to Web 3.0
Web 2.0 is already over. Its nimble, information-gathering side has been fully developed, along with its social/communicative aspect. There are no surprises in this anyway. From internet-time immemorial, people and socializing have been just as important as information. ‘Web 2.0’ in this sense signifies the concluding phase of an initial era; it does not really signal the beginning of a new one. 'Web 3.0', however, (sometimes referred to as the semantic web) may mark a difference. Rather than just maximizing our online surfing and socializing behaviors, Web 3.0 will increasingly facilitate the assembly of information and perspectives into knowledge (in part by mechanizing or automating the process). Educators will want to watch this one closely. Just as the internet has become THE library (much to the chagrin and sometimes denial of librarians) it may become THE school in Web 3.0. By providing a workable online "floating desktop" Google Tools is arguably just the beginning. You are invited to join in the discussion!
